Mahatma Gandhi and Lord Mountbatten were among the significant people who came here. The Chinar Tree in the courtyard of this palace turned hotel had witnessed meeting between Mahatma Gandhi and the then ruler of Kashmir Maharaja Hari Singh.
There are 113 rooms and suites in this hotel. The hotel also houses ten luxurious cottages. There are four restaurants, bars, conference and banquet rooms and a shopping area within this hotel. History of Lalit Grand Palace SrinagarLalit Grand Palace Srinagar was called Gulab Palace and it was the residence of the members of the royal family of Kashmir. Though the palace was built by Maharaja Pratap Singh, the beautiful interiors including carpets, furniture, upholstery and showpieces were done by Maharaja Hari Singh, nephew of Maharaja Hari Singh. During the rule of Maharaja Hari Singh, eminent guests were invited to this palace and were served some of the finest local and Rajasthani cuisines by the king and the queen. When Maharaja chose to settle down in Mumbai immediately after the independence of India, Gulab Bhavan got converted into a five start hotel named The Grand Palace. This was done in the year 1956.
