For better administration, Srinagar is divided into two towns namely Srinagar South and Srinagar North. There is also a block named Srinagar and there are 136 villages in it. Srinagar Municipality is responsible for looking after general amenities of the citizens of Srinagar.

Srinagar Municipal Corporation

Srinagar is divided into two divisions namely Left Water Division and Right Water Division. The Left Water Division is again divided into two zones namely East and North Zone and Right Water Division is divided into West and South Zone. Each zone has some ward within it. The executive wing of Municipal Corporation looks after the administration and Municipal Commissioner is the Chief Executive of the Municipal Corporation. He gets assistance from Joint Commissioner Administration, Joint Commissioner Planning and Joint Commissioner Works. Water supply, Sold Waste Management, Sanitation, Street Lighting, Construction of Public Properties and maintenance of the same, revenue generation, and birth and death registration are some of the basic responsibilities of Municipal Corporation of Srinagar.

Law and Order in Srinagar

Srinagar Law and Order is looked after by the Police Department. The police consist of armed police, traffic police, Home Guards, Railway Police and Civil Defense. There are 25 police stations in Srinagar.

Judiciary in Srinagar

Judiciary of SrinagarThe High Court of Jammu and Kashmir State has its seat in Srinagar during summer and Jammu in winter. This court was formed in 1928 on 26th March based on an order issued by the then Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir. The first Chief Justice of this High Court was Lala Kanwar Sain. Currently Hon’ble Justice Mr Mahesh Mittal Kumar is the Chief Judge of Jammu and Kashmir High Court.

Though the Administrative wing of the High Court and the Chief Justice shift to Srinagar during summer months from May to October, the working of court is operational both in Srinagar and Jammu wings the entire year. This high court has the capacity of 14 judges out of which 9 are permanent and 5 are the posts of additional judges.

Jails in Srinagar

Jails in Srinagar are under the control of Prison Department which is headed by the Inspector General Prisons. This department controls all the jails including the Srinagar Central Jail and ensures that prisoners are in safe custody. Various activities like educational programs, vocational programs and cultural events are arranged in these jails. Through various activities in the jail, rehabilitation and/or reformation of prisoners are taken care of. Srinagar Jail is the oldest jail of this state. Many renovation works have been done in this jail. The jail is located near Hari Parbat about 5 KM away from the main City. Right now, the department is thinking of shifting this jail as many human settlements have been established around this jail.

In this jail, prisoners can participate in educational programs conducted by IGNOU. Computer courses conducted by DOEACC are also there for the interested prisoners.

Prisoners are given vocational trainings to use their skills and intelligence. Training programs for candle making, weaving, pottery, embroidery, carpentry, cutting and Tailoring, electrician work are arranged and the items made by the inmates are sold through organizations or in different fairs or events.

Srinagar Development Authority

SDA or Srinagar Development Authority was formed in 1970. The authority was formed to ensure development of Srinagar is promoted and is done in secured manner. The authority has the right to acquire, dispose of and manage land and/or any other property in Srinagar so that any work related to water and/or electricity supply, sewerage disposal or to provide any other amenities to the citizens of Srinagar could be carried out successfully. The Chairman of SDA is the Minister for Urban Development and Urban Local Bodies of Jammu and Kashmir State.
